BRAX Roofing Proudly Serving Greenbelt, Maryland
Greenbelt, Maryland, situated 13 miles from the nation's capital, was the first planned federal community housing project. The layout of the city was modeled after the 19th-century English garden cities. Superblocks containing the homes were connected with interior walkways linking the homes and the town center. The plan was not limited to just residential housing, though. The entire city was planned with its proximity to nature in mind. Withstanding the test of time, the plan earned Greenbelt its recognition as a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
The initial population of 885 residents was made up entirely of low-income applicants that not only qualified based on their income but their willingness to be a part of the community organizations. This social experiment built a strong community in addition to providing homes to those in need. Eventually, the community would grow to include families commuting from the capital. However, the spirit and strength of the community never wavered. In 1952, the government decided to sell Greenbelt. The citizens banded together as a cooperative and bought the government's shares in their community.
The town continued to flourish and grow from its 885 initial residents in 1937 to more than 23,600 in 2017. The landscape has changed as new homes and businesses have been added, but the sense of community remains the same. With every challenge, the community has come together to help one another forming cooperatives and standing beside their neighbors through tough times.
